rPETE Infrastructure: Recognizing the Complicated Entanglement
of Increased rPETE Demand

General Session II

Tuesday, October 12, 2021

10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a..m.

(see full conference schedule)

Presentation Description:

We will examine the likely overall impact on the recycled and virgin PETE streams as brands drive towards higher recycled content in packaging. This analysis includes PX/PTA and MEG feedstocks, mechanical recycler implications, reclaimate feedstocks needed, new demand on the US stream from advanced recycling, consequences for existing demand for nonpackaging...and other dynamics that will ripple through the connected industry. "Entanglement" is an unavoidable reality as legislators and the packaging industry push the boundaries of the PETE value chain. This high level view will demonstrate that change at one level of the PETE industry will have impacts on other levels.

The presentation will include a discussion of:

  • Brands have committed to near term rPETE content goals that challenge the markets current ability to supply.
  • Increased rPETE content will have implications for virgin PETE producers as well as PX/PTA and MEG streams.
  • The US PETE steam will face transition pressures from advanced recycling, new legislation, and changes in trade flows.
